Deputy FM: Armenia promotes connectivity, regional stability

Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Robert Abisoghomonyan reaffirmed Armenia’s commitment to peace and stability in the South Caucasus during the 19th Ministerial Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement held in Kampala. He emphasized that fully unblocking regional transport routes would unlock vast trade and transit potential.

In his address, Abisoghomonyan noted that, in today’s geopolitical climate, marked by weakened multilateralism, reduced trust between states, and growing challenges to international law, international platforms like the Non-Aligned Movement must act decisively and swiftly.

“We must be resolute in rejecting the use of force and any action that violates the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states,” he stated.

Regarding Palestine, the Deputy Minister reiterated Armenia’s longstanding support for the two-state solution and sustainable peace in the Middle East. He highlighted Armenia’s recognition of the State of Palestine in June 2024 and the establishment of diplomatic relations during the UN General Assembly’s 79th session. Armenia actively participated in the international summit co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia and endorsed the final declaration, the New York Communiqué. Armenia also welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, aimed at ensuring humanitarian aid and the release of hostages.

Abisoghomonyan reaffirmed Armenia’s dedication to South Caucasus peace, referencing the August 8 trilateral summit at the White House. There, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and U.S. President Donald Trump signed a joint declaration. Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers preliminarily signed the “Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations.”

“This marks a major step toward peace in our region and opens new opportunities for political dialogue, trade, and investment—including with Non-Aligned Movement member states,” he said.

He stressed the importance of reopening transport routes, particularly through the Crossroads of Peace initiative and its TRIPP component, which aims to promote economic growth, dialogue, and people-to-people contacts. Armenia, he said, envisions a region transformed into a bridge between cultures and markets, rooted in peace and cooperation, and seeks the Non-Aligned Movement’s support for both initiatives.

Finally, he announced that in October 2026, Armenia will host the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the Convention on Biological Diversity in Yerevan. The event will serve as a global platform for key environmental negotiations, including updates to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, resource mobilization, and the interlinkage of biodiversity protection with climate change. Armenia aims to ensure a fully inclusive summit, bringing together governments, Indigenous peoples, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations to drive effective and results-oriented conservation efforts.
