Dozens arrested in Gyumri following mayor’s bust

On 20 October, a criminal proceeding was initiated by the Investigative Committee of Armenia under charges of participating in mass unrest and obstructing justice, in connection with the events outside the building of the Gyumri City Hall. The committee reported that 33 persons were detained.

The incident began when law‑enforcement entered the city hall with the aim of taking into custody the mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan. The Anti‑Corruption Committee of Armenia stated that during this operation eight individuals,, including Ghukasyan, were arrested on suspicion of large‑scale bribery and offering bribes by municipal officials.

Hours later Ghukasyan voluntarily left the building and approached a police vehicle, whereupon clashes erupted between his supporters and police. During this confrontation another 23 persons were taken into custody.

The Investigative Committee said the criminal case covers “participation in mass riots” and “obstruction of the administration of justice”.
