Armenian prosecutors have appealed the current sentence of Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan, seeking to extend his prison term to two years and six months.
Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan was originally sentenced to two years in prison. However, his legal team has reported that the Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia has filed an appeal requesting the sentence be increased to two years and six months.
“The Prosecutor General’s Office has appealed the sentencing decision concerning Archbishop Mikael, seeking a punishment of two years and six months of imprisonment,” the defense team said.
They added, “In our opinion, the prosecution's urgent appeal is aimed at influencing the appointment process of preferred judges in the Court of Criminal Appeals and pushing for a swift resolution of the case.”
Archbishop Ajapahyan is facing charges for publicly calling for actions aimed at seizing power, violating territorial integrity, renouncing sovereignty, or overthrowing the constitutional order by force. He was arrested on June 28.
