Simonyan open to mutual visits with Azerbaijani leaders

Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan described his recent meeting with Sahiba Gafarova, Chair of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis, in Geneva as warm and constructive. Speaking to reporters in parliament, he emphasized the importance of dialogue between the two countries’ legislative bodies.

Responding to whether the Azerbaijani parliamentary speaker would visit Armenia, Simonyan said nothing should be ruled out, according to Sputnik Armenia.

“Within international formats, let the President of Azerbaijan come here, our country's leader go there — and I’ll go as well. They will also come. There are issues that must be addressed beforehand, such as security and the matter of our detained individuals. It’s a bit difficult for us to go there — it’s clear why, since our people are still being held there,” he stated.

“I consider the meeting very positive and am grateful to the organizers. Both parliaments expressed willingness to help bring our societies closer, promote peaceful coexistence, and take steps toward mutual understanding. My counterpart shared this vision. It was a very warm meeting. We agreed to jointly explore concrete mechanisms and propose steps from both sides,” Simonyan added.

Earlier it was reported that Simonyan and Gafarova discussed possible paths to normalize Armenia-Azerbaijan relations in Geneva and positively assessed the agreements reached in Washington.
