29 face prosecution over Gyumri unrest

Armenia’s Investigative Committee announced that criminal prosecution has been initiated against 29 individuals involved in the recent mass unrest in Gyumri.

During the preliminary investigation, evidence emerged suggesting that on October 20, 2025, a group of people gathered near the Gyumri Municipality building — including around its entrances and inside the building — with the intention of obstructing investigative actions conducted by the Anti-Corruption Committee as part of an ongoing criminal case. These individuals allegedly interfered with the investigation and engaged in mass unrest, posing a threat to public safety.

Specifically, the group reportedly called for blocking the entrances of the municipal building to prevent the transfer of detained individuals located inside. They allegedly damaged the tires of a police transport vehicle and municipal property. In an attempt to disrupt the lawful duties of police officers, participants reportedly used violence, threw lighters and bottles at the officers, and hurled insults.

A total of 37 people have been detained during the investigation.

Of those, 19 face charges under Article 327, Part 1 (participation in mass unrest) and Article 486, Part 2, Clause 1 (interfering with justice by a group with prior agreement). Another 10 are charged under Article 486, Part 2, Clause 1 and Article 46-327, Part 1 (inciting participation in mass unrest).

The investigation is ongoing.

Note: A person accused of a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a legally binding court verdict, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.
