January 27 declared Remembrance and Respect Day

The Armenian government has approved a proposal to designate January 27 as “Remembrance and respect day for those who died for the Homeland”, which will be recognized as a non-working day. The bill was co-authored by Ruben Rubinyan from the ruling Civil Contract party and Gegham Nazaryan, a former member of the opposition “Armenia” faction, Aysor.am reports.

The justification for the bill noted that Armenia currently lacks a dedicated day to honor all service members and civilians who have died during military operations across different time periods. As a result, public commemorations usually occur on specific war anniversaries or on Army Day, January 28, which is generally perceived as celebratory rather than reflective.

If adopted, the new day of remembrance would establish a unified national occasion to honor all who perished in wartime. It would be observed on January 27, the day before Army Day.
