In a Facebook post, lawyer Aram Vardevanyan criticized the recent wave of detentions in Armenia, calling their scale “inhumane.” He noted that pre-trial detention rulings or refusals to lift them have become “truly unprecedented,” especially in high-profile public cases.
He cited the case of attorney and “In our way” movement member Ruben Mkhitaryan, stating: “All the video footage showing his entirely proper behavior is publicly available, yet even such objective, exonerating material held no weight with the court.”
Vardevanyan also referenced a recent ruling by the Constitutional Court reaffirming that the presence of alternative preventive measures is a key safeguard of justice and humanity in criminal proceedings.
“Therefore, the sheer extent of detention use in Armenia today is, in itself, inhumane,” he concluded. “Freedom for all political prisoners,” he added.
Earlier, lawyer Ruben Melikyan also condemned the arrest of Ruben Mkhitaryan, saying that two lawyers had been jailed in one week for clearly political reasons.
