France reaffirms support for Armenia’s sovereignty

They emphasized strengthening constructive cooperation between the two countries.

During an October 23 meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noël Barrot reaffirmed Paris’s support for Armenia’s sovereignty and the peace process, Armenpress reports, citing the French Foreign Ministry.

According to the statement, the ministers stressed the importance of deepening constructive cooperation between Armenia and France across various sectors, particularly ahead of the signing of a strategic partnership agreement, and of further strengthening EU–Armenia relations.

Barrot emphasized that Paris remains fully committed to supporting Armenia’s sovereignty and democratic stability. He reiterated France’s readiness to help advance normalization between Armenia and Azerbaijan, building on the positive developments initiated during the August 8 summit in Washington.

According to the French Foreign Ministry, expanding regional connectivity and opening borders while respecting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states will allow the South Caucasus to become a zone of peace and prosperity serving the interests of its peoples.

The minister also welcomed recent steps in this direction, including Azerbaijan’s announcement lifting restrictions on the transit of goods to Armenia.

On August 8, a trilateral summit was held at the White House with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. A joint declaration was signed following the meeting in Washington.

At the same event, Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, in the presence of the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the U.S., pre-signed the “Agreement on Peace and Establishment of Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
