Starting November 1, Armenia will operationalize its Police Guard—one of four specialized pillars within the national police structure—according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
The initiative is aimed at reinforcing Armenia’s internal security system through a more targeted and specialized toolkit. The structural model of the Police Guard is in its final stage, with clearly defined functions. The unit will operate as a fully independent structure and is not the successor of any existing police division.
The main objectives of the new guard include maintaining public order, ensuring internal security, guarding prioritized facilities under state protection, and organizing the secure transport of special cargo. It will also assist in upholding the rule of law during martial law or states of emergency, participate in civil protection operations, support the security of individuals under state protection, and contribute to the work of criminal investigation bodies.
The ministry emphasized that the guard’s personnel are currently undergoing intensive training.
“With the formation of the Police Guard, internationally recognized standards for the use of force will be enforced for the first time. Personnel will not be authorized to use force unless they receive proper special training,” the statement read.
The development of the unit’s structure and acquisition of technical resources are nearing completion.
