During the general debate on the agenda item “Assistance in Mine Action” at the Fourth Committee of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Armenia’s delegation emphasized the humanitarian nature of demining and reiterated the country’s firm commitment to humanitarian norms and principles, according to Armenia’s Permanent Mission to the UN.
“Recognizing the critical importance of mine action assistance, and reaffirming Armenia’s commitment to international efforts addressing the humanitarian consequences of anti-personnel mines and other explosive remnants of war, the Republic of Armenia has consistently contributed to the comprehensive implementation of these objectives in conflict-affected zones,” the statement read.
Armenia’s commitment to humanitarian principles was particularly demonstrated through its 2019–2024 humanitarian mission in Aleppo, Syria, where Armenian experts took part in international operations to detect and neutralize landmines.
The statement also stressed the importance of sincere and depoliticized cooperation in efforts to prevent human suffering and ensure safety.
The entire team of Armenian demining and medical personnel deployed to Aleppo returned to Armenia on the evening of November 29, 2024, aboard a Ministry of Defense transport aircraft, due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation and the outbreak of active military operations in Syria. Armenia’s professionals had been engaged in their mission in Syria’s second-largest city since 2019.
