Armenia opens transit route from Turkey to Azerbaijan

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced during a parliamentary discussion on the 2026 state budget that Armenia is ready, effective immediately, to facilitate cargo transit from Turkey to Azerbaijan and vice versa. The designated route runs through Margara–Yeghegnadzor–Sisian–Goris.

He emphasized that this readiness comes in response to Azerbaijan’s recent announcement to lift transit restrictions toward Armenia, which he called a “historic development” marking the first stage of breaking Armenia’s regional isolation.

According to Pashinyan, this is the first time in Armenia’s history that a state budget is being discussed under conditions of confirmed peace with Azerbaijan. He reaffirmed the August 8, 2025, Washington Declaration, asserting that peace between the two countries has been both officially recognized and numerically defined.

“For 1 year and 8 months, not a single Armenian soldier has died as a result of gunfire along the Armenia–Azerbaijan border. That’s unprecedented in our history of independence,” he noted.

He stated that peace has brought new realities, including Azerbaijan lifting its own restrictions on Armenian-bound transit. In response, Armenia is offering immediate access for Turkish and Azerbaijani trucks through its territory.

“This is the only route we can activate today,” he added.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev confirmed that Baku had lifted previous restrictions on cargo transit through Armenia, with Kazakh grain set to be the first such shipment via the Aktau–Baku route and Georgia. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk also stated that Azerbaijan is ready to allow Russian cargo into Armenia via its territory.
