Artsakh army ex-commander placed under house arrest

The detention measure for the former commander of the Artsakh Defense Army, General-Lieutenant Mikayel Arzumanyan, has been changed to house arrest. The announcement was made by lawyer Yerem Sargsyan on his Facebook page.

According to the post, "By a decision of Judge Vardges Sargsyan of Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Court, the detention measure applied to General-Lieutenant Mikayel Arzumanyan, former commander of the Defense Army, has been replaced with house arrest."

On September 1, 2022, the Prosecutor General’s Office announced that Arzumanyan, also a former advisor to the President of Artsakh, had been charged for issuing a retreat order to troops who had just recaptured the strategically significant Arega height and surrounding positions during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war. He had already been arrested on the same day.

Court sessions in Arzumanyan’s case are held behind closed doors, meaning media were not able to access information on the ongoing trial. Citing requirements related to pre-trial secrecy and military confidentiality, the defense team has declined to disclose further details.
