Official says Independence Declaration “has certain issues”

Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister, Arayik Harutyunyan, stated that he sees certain issues in Armenia’s Declaration of Independence. He made the comment in a briefing with journalists in parliament, as reported by Armenpress.

“I believe the Independence Declaration has certain problems,” Harutyunyan said.

Asked whether he agrees with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s earlier statement that the declaration’s content implies the Republic of Armenia cannot exist, Harutyunyan responded affirmatively.

In November 2024, Pashinyan declared he had come to the “terrifying conclusion” that the content of Armenia’s Declaration of Independence essentially asserts that the Republic of Armenia cannot exist.

Pashinyan had said: “I’ve read our Declaration of Independence dozens of times, especially in recent years. And I’ve come to a terrifying conclusion: the content of that declaration is that the Republic of Armenia cannot exist. This is our greatest problem and tragedy.”

He added that a true citizen of Armenia is “someone who does not seek a homeland or state outside the Republic, but finds it in the Republic itself.”
