Armenia, EU explore deeper democratic cooperation

On October 29, Hayk Konjoryan, head of the Civil Contract faction in Armenia’s National Assembly, met with European Parliament member Nacho Sánchez Amor. The two discussed the current state and future prospects of Armenia–European Union cooperation, including upcoming initiatives and potential areas for development.

Both parties emphasized the importance of deepening relations with the EU, particularly through efforts to strengthen democratic institutions and promote lasting peace in the region.

At a session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly's Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy in Yerevan on October 28, Sánchez Amor, who serves as the European Parliament’s standing rapporteur on Turkey, stated that if people in Armenia are being prosecuted for expressing opinions, including on social media, it raises serious concerns. He stressed that in a democracy, no one should be imprisoned for their opinion.

“We know what happens when you start prosecuting people simply for posting something online,” he said.
