Mamijanyan, Sánchez Amor discuss rights, justice issues

Hayk Mamijanyan, head of the I Have Honor parliamentary faction, met with Nacho Sánchez Amor, the European Parliament’s lead member on Armenia within the Democracy Support and Election Coordination Group and its standing rapporteur on Turkey. Sánchez Amor is in Armenia to participate in the autumn session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly.

During the meeting, Mamijanyan presented the internal political situation in Armenia and voiced concerns about the country's judiciary, human rights protections, and freedom of speech, according to the Parliament’s press service.

He also raised the issue of Armenian citizens held in Azerbaijan, stressing the importance of support from international institutions, particularly the European Union.

Mamijanyan noted that, following the closure of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) office in Baku, he had sent a letter to the EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos. In it, he suggested that the EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan personally visit the detained Armenian citizens in Baku.

The two also discussed broader regional developments.

Speaking at the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly’s Committee on Political Affairs, Human Rights and Democracy in Yerevan on October 28, Sánchez Amor warned that in a democracy, no one should be imprisoned for expressing opinions, even on social media. “We know what happens when you start prosecuting people simply for posting something online,” he said.
