European Parliament backs lasting peace efforts

The European Parliament is committed to supporting the establishment of a just and lasting peace in the South Caucasus, said EP Vice President Yunus Omarjee during the 12th plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly held in Yerevan. He spoke on behalf of EP President Roberta Metsola.

“It is a great honor for me to speak on behalf of the President of the European Parliament in this historic city, Yerevan. Let me extend my sincere gratitude to the Armenian National Assembly for the warm welcome and excellent organization. Mr. Speaker, your hospitality and commitment show that you attach great importance to European dialogue and cooperation,” Omarjee said.

He noted that the last Euronest plenary session in Yerevan was held in 2015, in the very same hall. “This meeting reflects the ongoing development of Armenia-EU relations,” he added.

“We welcome the steps taken by Armenia and Azerbaijan toward peace. This is very important. The European Parliament is committed to supporting this delicate yet vital process to ensure conditions for a fair and sustainable peace that can bring stability and prosperity to the entire region,” Omarjee stated, delivering Metsola’s message.

On August 8, a joint declaration was signed at the White House by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, following a trilateral meeting. Armenian and Azerbaijani Foreign Ministers Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov also pre-signed a peace agreement between the two countries in the presence of their leaders.
