EU pledges support if Armenia seeks membership

The European Parliament is prepared to support Armenia in its process of joining the European Union, said EP Vice President Yunus Omarjee during the 12th plenary session of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan. Speaking on behalf of EP President Roberta Metsola, he emphasized the strategic importance of Armenia’s recent decisions.

“Armenia’s recent choices are extremely significant. The country has adopted a historic law that sends a clear and strong message: it sees its future within Europe. This is not just symbolic; it is a strategic decision to join the European democratic family. The European Parliament is ready to assist Armenia on this historic journey if it decides to formally submit a membership application,” Omarjee stated.

He added that Armenia’s pro-European orientation aligns well with the practical cooperation already established between the EU and Armenia.

“Beyond political statements, there is a real and tangible partnership, particularly in the economic sphere and within the Eastern Partnership’s investment programs. We are working together to create jobs, modern infrastructure, and new opportunities for young Armenians. When the EU and Armenia move forward together, they can build a more prosperous and just future for everyone,” Omarjee concluded.

In March 2025, the Armenian Parliament adopted a law initiating the country’s process of applying for EU membership.
