43 prosecuted over Gyumri unrest, 26 detained

Forty-three people have been prosecuted in connection with the mass unrest in Gyumri, with 26 of them placed in pre-trial detention, according to the Investigative Committee, reports 1lurer.am .

The preliminary investigation is ongoing at the Shirak Regional Investigative Department. The probe concerns allegations of participation in mass riots, obstruction of officials performing their legal duties, interference in political or judicial processes, and obstruction of justice.

Of the 43 individuals involved, 29 are specifically accused of inciting others to block entrances to the municipality building in an attempt to prevent the transfer of detained individuals located inside. They are also accused of damaging police vehicles and municipal property, using violence against police officers, and hurling lighters and bottles at them while directing insults at law enforcement personnel.

Separately, the Anti-Corruption Committee reported that several officials from the Gyumri municipality have been arrested on bribery charges. According to the allegations, they received and gave bribes in large amounts. Among those detained are the head of the community and the city’s chief architect.
