The 68‑year‑old Gevorg Nersisyan, brother of the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, has been placed in custody for one month, as decided by the Armavir general jurisdiction court under Judge Arman Babakhanyan, his lawyer Ara Zohrabyan told Pastinfo.
According to Zohrabyan, a motion regarding the detention of Gevorg Nersisyan’s son, Hambardzum Nersisyan, will soon be submitted.
Gevorg Nersisyan and his son Hambardzum were arrested in Vagharshapat following a complaint by electoral candidate Harutyun Mkrtchyan of the Republic party, who alleged that the Nersisyan family attempted to obstruct his campaign. The lawyer calls the allegation “false accusation”.
The Investigative Committee of Armenia has reported that a criminal case has been opened during the pre‑investigation against two individuals under Article 211 of the Armenian Criminal Code (obstruction of campaigning or coercion to abstain from campaigning).
