FM says peace boosts national sovereignty

Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated that peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan will significantly enhance both countries’ sovereignty. He made the remarks at the international “Orbeli Forum: Building Peace and Multilateral Cooperation.”

“Any conflict creates fertile ground for third countries to pursue their interests in the dispute and to strengthen their leverage over the conflicting parties,” Mirzoyan said, as reported by Armenpress.

He stressed that there are no absolutely independent states, since countries are interconnected through trade and other relationships, which are essential for development.

“From a strategic standpoint, we will be able to reinforce our sovereignty. On the other hand, some may see these interconnections as a lack of sovereignty, but I firmly believe that’s not the case,” he said.

On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, U.S. President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, a joint declaration was signed summarizing the outcomes of the Washington meeting. In the presence of their leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov preliminarily signed the “Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
