New rail route reduces Upper Lars traffic pressure

A shipment of 15 railcars loaded with Russian wheat is set to reach Georgia from Azerbaijan on November 5 and will subsequently arrive in Armenia, according to Alexey Melnikov, General Director of South Caucasus Railways CJSC, as reported by Sputnik Armenia.

“The grain is already en route and will soon be in Armenia,” Melnikov said during a press briefing.

He described the event as a significant milestone for South Caucasus Railway, marking a new stage in its operations.

“Today, Kazakh grain will reach Azerbaijan from Russia and will arrive in Armenia in the coming days. For us, as railway professionals, this is a major development, especially the fact that cargo can now reach Armenia from Kazakhstan, other countries, and Russia,” he stated.

Melnikov also noted that container shipments from China have already been successfully organized, significantly expanding Armenia’s supply capabilities. He emphasized that the new route is attracting considerable interest and expressed confidence that it will be widely used.

He added that the new rail corridor will ease the heavy traffic at the Upper Lars border crossing and reduce freight costs, particularly those associated with high-priced shipments via the Black Sea. This route, he said, will be vital not only for major grain suppliers but also for fuel importers and other business partners.

Melnikov highlighted the economic potential of this new direction, predicting increased rail freight volumes into Armenia.

Earlier, Armenia’s Minister of Economy, Gevorg Papoyan, confirmed that Russian wheat is being transported to Armenia by rail through Azerbaijani territory. He also noted that a Kazakh wheat shipment is en route via the same corridor.
