Shoigu: South Caucasus needs constant attention

The situation in the South Caucasus requires continuous attention, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu said during a meeting in Moscow with Armenia’s Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan, TASS reports.

“Everything related to recent and various developments in the region, throughout the Caucasus and particularly in the South Caucasus, requires our constant attention and consultation,” said Shoigu.

Grigoryan responded by saying he was ready to share more details on the regional situation and thanked Shoigu for the opportunity to meet.

Shoigu stressed that Russia has made a substantial contribution to the Armenia–Azerbaijan normalization process, according to Sputnik Armenia.

“Russia’s contribution to normalizing relations that are still not fully settled between Armenia and Azerbaijan is significant. All this time, Russia has done everything to help make the situation more stable and ultimately bring peace,” he said.

He also hinted at the United States’ portrayal of its global role, saying, “Some may get the impression that the U.S. is the only country that has resolved eight or nine conflicts around the world,” referencing frequent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that he settled eight conflicts in eight months in office.

The meeting took place during a summit of the Security Council secretaries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in Moscow. Shoigu is also scheduled to meet separately with the Azerbaijani Security Council secretary and other officials.
