Yerevan, Brussels eye new agreement to boost partnership

Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, during a meeting in Copenhagen with Danish Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre, discussed ways to deepen the partnership between Armenia and the European Union. They emphasized the significance of a new agenda to be signed soon, which aims to elevate bilateral cooperation to a new level.

The ministers reviewed recent progress across various domains and future initiatives, including the ongoing process for visa liberalization.

Mirzoyan stressed that expanding ties with the EU aligns with the expectations of Armenian society, as reflected in a law adopted this year supporting the launch of Armenia’s EU accession process.

They also exchanged views on challenges facing democratic development and explored opportunities for experience-sharing to overcome these obstacles. In this context, the EU’s continued support was underscored as vital for strengthening Armenia’s resilience, particularly in countering hybrid threats.

Mirzoyan and Bjerre additionally discussed prospects for expanding bilateral cooperation between Armenia and Denmark, especially in energy, transport, and trade, with a focus on diversification.

The meeting also touched on potential cooperation in preparation for the European Political Community summit set to be held in Yerevan on May 4, 2026.

Mirzoyan outlined the positive atmosphere that emerged between Armenia and Azerbaijan following the August 8 Peace Summit, which may foster regional and broader economic cooperation. In this regard, they discussed the Armenian government's Crossroads of Peace initiative and its “TRIPP Route” component, which is fully aligned with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy.

Separately, European Commission Deputy Director General for Migration and Home Affairs Johannes Luchner handed Armenian Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan an action plan within the EU visa liberalization dialogue. The plan outlines reforms Armenia must implement in security, border control, human rights, and other areas.
