Restoration begins on historic Armenian church in Turkey

Restoration work has begun on the St. Sarkis Armenian Apostolic Church in Turkey’s Diyarbakir province, a historic structure with a history spanning nearly 500 years. Diyarbakir Governor Murat Zorluoğlu visited the site to inspect the progress, reports Ermenihaber.

Located in the Alipasha neighborhood of the Sur district, the church had deteriorated over time “due to the absence of a community” and sustained further damage during the devastating earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, 2023.

During his visit, officials presented the governor with details of the restoration program that began in 2024. Zorluoğlu emphasized the government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage.

“Once restoration is complete, this historical structure will contribute significantly to Sur’s architectural heritage and the city’s cultural diversity,” the governor stated.
