Armenia to host un biodiversity summit in 2026

Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan announced that during the November 13 session of Armenia’s 8th National Assembly, he presented the 2026 state budget allocations for his ministry. The update was shared via his Facebook page.

Highlighting the political and international significance of the upcoming summit, Matevosyan focused on the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, set to take place in Yerevan in October 2026.

He emphasized that by hosting COP17, Armenia will become a platform for global environmental dialogue.

“I spoke about the importance of the event, its budgetary framework, and outlined the organizational process. In my speech, I also addressed the opportunities that come with hosting and presiding over the summit,” the minister stated.

Matevosyan stressed that Armenia will not only serve as an organizer but will also take on the role of a primary mediator in negotiations, acting as an international and regional bridge for environmental dialogue.

“All efforts are being carried out in full compliance with the UN conference standards, ensuring inclusivity and a climate of open discussion,” he added.

The minister noted that hosting COP17 will strengthen Armenia’s position within international environmental policy frameworks and turn the country into a central hub for fostering partnerships and regional cooperation.

The UN COP17 biodiversity summit is scheduled to be held in Yerevan in October 2026.
