Yerevan delegation raised POW issue during Baku visit

Naira Sultanyan, a member of Armenia’s civil society, stated during a press briefing that the issue of prisoners of war was raised during their visit to Baku.

“We raised the issue of captives even during the Azerbaijanis’ visit to Armenia. We also raised it directly with Mr. Hajiyev. There were no restrictions—neither from the Armenian nor the Azerbaijani side—on discussing the matter,” Sultanyan said, according to Radar Armenia.

She noted that the Armenian authorities have assured that consistent efforts are being made to address the issue, and that Azerbaijani official Hikmet Hajiyev also confirmed negotiations are underway.

However, Sultanyan said that no specific answers or details about names or individuals were provided.

Representatives of Armenia’s civil society visited Baku on November 20–21 as part of a reciprocal exchange. On November 20, the Armenian government approved funding for a Baku-Yerevan charter flight as part of a classified agenda item, an allocation of AMD 18 million.

The Azerbaijani delegation’s earlier visit to Armenia drew criticism due to the inclusion of Dilara Efendiyeva, who had participated in the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh as a so-called “eco-activist.”
