Armenia assumes chair of OPCW General Committee

On November 24, Armenia officially assumed the chairmanship of the General Committee at the 30th Conference of States Parties to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), according to Armenia’s Embassy in the Netherlands.

In a statement marking the occasion, Ambassador Viktor Biyagov, Armenia’s Permanent Representative to the OPCW, said: “It is a great honor for Armenia to undertake this responsible role. Our chairmanship will reflect Armenia’s unwavering commitment to the core objectives of the Chemical Weapons Convention. We are ready to contribute our experience to bridge disagreements and seek constructive solutions.”

The General Committee is one of the central bodies of the conference, composed of all member states. It reviews key substantive issues that remain unresolved due to their sensitive nature.

The committee’s core mission is to analyze submitted proposals and, through negotiations, aim for consensus solutions acceptable to all parties.

As chair, Armenia holds full responsibility for organizing and coordinating the committee’s work, ensuring active engagement in discussions and negotiations. The presiding country also plays a key role in arranging informal consultations and aligning various procedural efforts.
