Tatoyan urges ex-presidents to skip 2026 election

Arman Tatoyan, head of the Wings of Unity movement, has urged Armenia’s former presidents not to participate in the 2026 parliamentary elections.

During a press conference, he stated: “If you truly want Nikol Pashinyan to lose, then you should not run in the 2026 elections,” as reported by Aravot.am .

According to Tatoyan, Armenia’s political system is trapped in a closed cycle. One group caused the country’s problems, while another group is incapable of solving them. He argued that the current political landscape is polarized between two camps—Nikol Pashinyan and the former presidents—who actually reinforce each other.

“Pashinyan came to power on a wave of hatred for the former leaders and now maintains that same toxic dynamic. These two sides feed off each other, and without one, the other cannot exist,” Tatoyan said. As a result, the country remains stuck in the past, with even absurd developments becoming destructive for national security.

“One camp is pushing us toward Belarus; the other, under Pashinyan, wants to turn us into an Azerbaijani province,” he claimed.

He criticized the current narrative of mutual accusations: former leaders blame Pashinyan for triggering war, while Pashinyan questions why Armenian soldiers serve outside Armenia, statements Tatoyan says are against national interests.

Tatoyan emphasized that 60–70% of citizens do not participate in critical political decisions due to disillusionment and absenteeism in elections. “I intend to become their voice,” he declared.

He called for the creation of a new political force to break the closed system poisoning Armenian politics for the past five years.

Tatoyan outlined three core principles for change: a strong state, strong security, and a just society. He emphasized strengthening ties with the United States as a trusted partner.

He pledged to establish a special commission on his first day as prime minister to develop a comprehensive security reform program within six months. The goal is to achieve deterrence and eventually balance with the adversary during the first five-year mandate. “Only strength will bring peace,” he said.

Tatoyan also presented his team’s economic growth plan and challenged Prime Minister Pashinyan to a debate.

“Mr. Pashinyan, I invite you to a debate on January 15. Pick the place and the questions. You can bring Petros Ghazaryan along so you won’t feel alone,” he said.

Parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 2026.
