On November 25, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan met with representatives of the “Develop Our Village” NGO, including teachers from Kotayk schools, college lecturers, and high school students. The meeting was held as part of the global “16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence” campaign.
Addressing the issue of protecting women’s rights, Manasyan emphasized that the campaign's launch provides a valuable platform to reaffirm the importance of safeguarding the rights of women and girls and to highlight the need for a systemic approach in the field.
“This day is another opportunity to underscore the importance of promoting and protecting women’s rights. Unfortunately, our society still faces widespread manifestations of gender-based violence, domestic abuse, and psychological, economic, and sexual violence against women and girls,” she said.
She outlined steps being taken to advance women’s rights and highlighted the need to overcome harmful stereotypes and promote values of equality. Manasyan noted that reforming the education system is a priority, as it often serves as the breeding ground for attitudes and beliefs that contradict human rights.
The ombudswoman also addressed the specific challenges related to promoting women’s rights in national minority communities and discussed various aspects concerning women with disabilities.
Participants were able to voice their concerns and receive clarifications during an open Q&A session.
