Supreme Spiritual Council convenes at Echmiadzin

A session of the Supreme Spiritual Council is underway at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, confirmed Father Asoghik Karapetyan, Director of the Church’s museums and archives, reports Sputnik Armenia.

“The session will end, and we’ll know everything then,” he said, noting that he was unaware whether the clergymen who recently met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan were present at the gathering.

When asked about the atmosphere within the Church, Father Asoghik described it as “peaceful and prayerful.”

The Armenian government has maintained a critical stance toward the Church, especially the Catholicos, for an extended period. Currently, leading clergy involved in the Sacred Struggle movement—Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan of Shirak, and Bishop Mkrtich of Aragatsotn—remain under detention.

On November 27, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with a group of bishops from the Armenian Apostolic Church. The meeting included Archbishop Abraham Mkrtchyan, Archbishop Arakel Karamyan, Archbishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, Bishop Anushavan Jamkochyan, Bishop Vrtanes Abrahamyan, Archbishop Navasard Kchoyan, Bishop Arakel Tigranyan, and Bishop Gevorg Saroyan.
