ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT SPEAKER DISCUSSED PROSPECTS OF EXPANDING POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION WITH SYRIAN LEADERSHIP

In the course of the recent visit of the Armenian parliamentary delegation to Syria the prospects of expanding the political and economic cooperation between the two countries were discussed. As Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Armen Khachatrian reported at the press conference today, the Armenian parliamentarians and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad discussed in particular the opportunity of exporting Armenian goods to Syria through the territory of Turkey. In the Speaker’s words, President expressed readiness to use the friendly relations between Damascus and Ankara to resolve the problem. The Speaker of the National Assembly also reported that in the course of the meeting with the Syrian Prime Minister the Armenian deputies had discussed the opportunities of the military cooperation of the two countries and creation of joint enterprises. In Khachatrian’s words, the parties emphasized the importance of cooperation within international organizations. In the course of the meeting the parties also concerned the problem of resolution of conflicts. Khachatrian noted that both Armenian and Syrian deputies shared the opinion that the current conflicts should be resolved peacefully. The Armenian delegation presented the position of official Yerevan in the question of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, which proceeds from the principle of peoples’ right for self-determination.
