Armenian Prime Minister pays tribute to victims of Spitak earthquake

Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan visited the towns of Spitak and Vanadzor and paid tribute to victims of the Spitak earthquake of 1988. Tigran Sargsyan participated in the liturgy served for the victims of the devastating earthquake in the Church of Surb Haroutyun (Saint Resurrection). The Prime Minister also laid a wreath at the monument to the victims of the earthquake.

After that, Tigran Sargsyan went to the city of Vanadzor, where he visited the Church of Surb Astvatsatsin (Saint Mother of God). The Prime Minister laid a wreath at the cross stone of earthquake victims, and also participated in an event timed to December 7, press office of the RA government reported.

21 years have been passed since the devastating Spitak earthquake in Armenia. On December 7, 1988 at 11.41 local time 7.2 magnitude tremors on the Richter scale practically razed the city of Spitak and Leninakan (now Gyumri). 25 thousand people were killed, about 100 thousand people were injured, thousands became lifelong disabled, more than 500 thousand remained homeless. Spitak earthquake is one of the biggest disasters in the world.
