ARMENIANS OF JAVAKHK ACHIEVED DISMISSAL OF GOVERNOR GIGLA BARAMIDZE

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze has accepted the resignation of Gigla Baramidze, Governor of Samtskhe-Javakhetia compactly populated by Armenians. Chief of the Bureau on Caucasian Affairs of the State Chancellery of Georgia Temur Mosiashvili will take this office. Let us remind that deputies of the local government bodies of the district provinces inhabited by Armenians demanded dismissal of Baramidze since last summer. Head of Akhalkalaki administration Melik Raisian, who is deputy of the Georgian Parliament, has repeatedly come out with such demands. The local office of the ruling “Union of Georgian Citizens” party also insists upon dismissal of the Governor. The representatives of the organization consider that “Baramidze has usurped power, does not account of anyone’s opinion and presents distorted information about the situation in the district to Tbilisi.” Melik Raisian stated last August, “If Baramidze is not dismissed mass protest actions will begin in the district.” In his words, “Baramidze has created a legend that he is indispensable. His advocates assert that as soon as the Governor retires, Javakhk will secede from Georgia.”
