Turks have often threatened to fulfil the above mentioned scenario trying that way to frighten the West and have its support during the discussion of the principles of unification of the two communities of the Cyprus. However, neither the Greek party nor the international mediators and the EU wanted to support the marionette Turkish regime of Rauf Denktash who always hinders to the negotiations on reestablishment of the unity of Cyprus. The protocol signed in Athens means that the EU recognizes the President Papandopoulos as the leader of the Cyprus State with its capital city of Nicosia. The document foresees that the principles of the EU will not be spread on the northern part of the country. The Turks populating the northern part of Turkey remained out of the border that will divide them from the civilized Europe. In Turkey there are different opinions concerning the ways of overcoming this situation. If the government pretends it does not loose its hopes for the possibility of the unification in the future of the two communities of Cyprus, the opposition insists on more escalation of the conflict.
The leader of the only opposition party represented in the Parliament, Deniz Baykal said recently that “from now on Ankara will pay more attention to the process of recognition by the world community of the Turkish Republic of the Northern Cyprus”. This is the same person who in the end of last year argued with the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Yakis Yashar who said the Turkish armed forces acted as occupants in Cyprus. Yashar became the first Turkish politician who told the reality. Maybe this is why soon he was dismissed from his post. We shall remind that the plan of settlement of the Cyprus problem proposed by the United Nations Organization was foreseeing liberation by the Turks of the 9% of the territories occupied by them. But the Turkish community, which now controls the 38% of the island, was not satisfied (We shall note that the Turks make only the 12% of the population of Cyprus).
Will the Turks gain from their obstinacy, or they will loose. It is not difficult to guess if take into account the fact that the level of life in the Greek Cyprus is 4 times higher than in Greece, and 6 times higher than in Turkey.
