“Peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict does not have an alternative.” Russian President Vladimir Putin stated this at the briefing on completion of the Russian-Azeri high rank negotiations held in the Kremlin. In his words, the peace treaty based on a compromise should not admit “division into winners and losers.” The Russian leader emphasized Moscow aimed at developing relations both with Armenia and Azerbaijan and thus was interested in resolution of Karabakh conflict in shortest time. According to his estimate, the conflict is “the most acute.” President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev in his turn stated he was satisfied with the fact that the Russian political leadership paid special attention to settling the Armenian-Azeri confrontation. He expressed confidence that Moscow would play “an important, decisive role” in the conflict resolution.
