As it is known, the European Union has undertaken to grant Armenia 100 mln euros for the fund of creation of alternative sources that will have to compensate the electricity production if Armenian APP closes. As head of European commission representatives, Ambassador Torben Kholtse has informed «Arminfo» agency, the fund means might be spent on the building of hydroelectric power stations, construction of gas pipelines, increase of efficiency of energy distributing nets. At the present time, Armenia’s energy ministry is developing a proposal on concrete project realization. Kholtse has reminded that Armenian government has undertaken the obligation to close the atomic power plant. The EU considers that the Armenian APP is old both technically and economically and its further exploitation will increase the expenses and potential danger for the environment. Meanwhile it is well known that plants such as the Armenian one function in many countries. The atomic power plant has not exhausted its technical resource yet. At the present time Armenian APP provides for 40% of energy needs of the country. Even though Armenia has undertaken the obligation to close the plant by 2004, the experts claim that the APP technical conditions guarantee trouble-free operation until 2017.
