Heads of the enterprises of the light industry of Armenia have addressed the Ministry of Industry and Trade a request to meet with the Republic high rank authorities. In the course of the meeting fixed for February, the enterprise directors will present the urgent problems of the branch to the Government. As President of one of the biggest textile enterprises of the Republic “Garun” open stock company Gohar Yenokian reported in a conversation with “Arminfo” agency correspondent, 18% custom duty was one of the obstacles for promotion of Armenian production to U.S. markets. Thus, in the words of some American entrepreneurs, if Armenia had developing country status, the Armenian industry would have been provided with orders the whole year round. According to U.S. laws, the developing countries do not pay customs for their production. The company President noted that she intended to raise that question at the coming meeting. In the words of Gohar Yenokian, the events in New York and Washington on September 11 have negatively told on development of the light industry in Armenia. Thus, “Armex” American company has 50% reduced its textile orders to the enterprises of the Republic. Continuation of cooperation with “Suzanne Martin” British company is questionable. Last summer a contract was concluded for sewing 50 thousand coats. The Armenian production also awoke interest of the French who ordered sewing 10 thousand jackets.
