PACE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE MADE ULTIMATUM TO OFFICIAL BAKU DEMANDING UNCONDITIONAL RELEASE OF POLITICAL PRISONERS

PACE Committee on legal affairs and human rights has passed a resolution, by which it makes an ultimatum to official Baku – either Azerbaijani authorities fulfill their obligations on releasing political prisoners, or the country will be expelled from the Council of Europe. The document consisting of 13 items says that in spite of releasing 220 political prisoners, there is a significant number of “prisoners of conscience.” Particularly, there are still 17 persons in the prisons, who were recognized as political prisoners by PACE experts. Committee on legal affairs and human rights again reminded Azerbaijani authorities that there could not be any political prisoners in a country-member of the Council of Europe. “The Assembly reserves its right to undertake any measures to make Azeri authorities to release any political prisoners in correspondence with the commitments made by the country while entering the Council of Europe,” – the resolution stresses.
