According to information in Turkish mass media, Azerbaijani elements may be sent to Afghanistan as part of the peacekeeping contingent. As it is known, the question of sending peacekeeping forces consisting of representatives of such Muslim countries as Turkey, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Kirgizia, to Afghanistan under UN aegis is under consideration. Azeri Foreign Minister Vilayat Guliev stated inclusion of Azeri military in the peacekeeping contingent in Afghanistan “is a matter of the near future.” As it is known, Azerbaijan has some experience in participating in peacekeeping operations. An Azeri platoon formed a part of the Turkish battalion, which took part in NATO operation in Kosovo.
