OSCE MINSK GROUP CO-CHAIRMEN SATISFIED WITH HEYDAR ALIYEV’S ASPIRATION TO RESOLVE KARABAKH PROBLEM BY PEACEFUL MEANS

OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairmen have expressed satisfaction with Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev’s position concerning the Karabakh settlement, “Arminfo” agency reports. “He categorically rules out the military way of solving the problem,” – Russian Co-Chairman, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Vyacheslav Trubnikov stated at a press conference in “Hyatt Regency” Baku hotel, commenting on the results of the meeting with Aliyev. He noted the Azeri President gave his opinion on each of the proposals presented by the Minsk Group Co-Chairmen in the course of the meeting. According to Trubnikov, the main result for the mediators was that “Heydar Aliyev retained constructive approach.” The Russian diplomat expressed an opinion that the changes in the contemporary world would urge the leaders of both countries to search for a quick solution of the problem. Answering the question whether the increasing Azerbaijani disposition to solve the problem via military means will affect the Karabakh conflict settlement process, Trubnikov said, “such experienced politician as Heydar Aliyev will find the correct time and the correct means to solve the problem.”
Commenting on the statement of the Armenian Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanian that Yerevan supports the “Parisian principles” of the conflict settlement, the French Co-Chairman Phillip de Suremain noted, the point was “what could be realized and what could not”, but concrete accords were not reached in the course of the negotiations in Paris.
The Co-Chairmen told in conclusion they would report to Armenian President Robert Kocharian on the results of their talks with Aliyev.
