Spain, Paraguay advance to quarter-finals

In the final two matches of the Round of 16 in the World Cup, Spain faced Portugal and Paraguay faced Japan only to come out on top. Now these two teams will join the other six that have already completed the knockout round.

Nobody scored in the match between Spain and Portugal until the 63rd minute, when David Villa finally cut through Portugal’s defense to give Spain the only point of the game, which means they won 1-0.

Vicente Del Bosque, the coach for Spain, said that David’s score was enough to qualify, but he has also done great work in all aspects. David is very used to attacking and trying to move to the goal, but he contributed defensively also on Tuesday, he continued. Del Bosque also said that the game was very intense, and he felt they controlled the ball more during the first half and simply played better than Portugal in the second half.

But if people think that was a bad game score-wise, their mouths will hang open when they find out about what happened during the match between Paraguay and Japan. No one scored in that game…period – a total shocker, particularly in the knockout round of the World Cup. However, Paraguay ended up winning 5-3 due to penalty kicks.

This means that Spain and Paraguay will now face each other at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday at 8:30pm (local time) for the World Cup quarter-final. The other matches will include: Netherlands vs. Brazil and Uruguay vs. Ghana on Friday; while the other match on Saturday will be Argentina vs. Germany, mns.co.uk reported.
