As reported by Turkish newspapers, governor of US Alabama State Don Siegelman lately declared August 30 «memorial day of the tragedy, Turks went through during the struggle for liberty and independence». The document accepted by the governor says: «Millions of citizens of different origins from the Ottoman Empire died as a result of World War l and break-up of the Ottoman empire in inter-communal encounters, from wandering and diseases». In the governor’s words, «recognition of the tragedy experienced by Turks is very important not to let similar human tragedies resulting from wars to happen again». It is necessary to note that the document ignores the fact that just during the period of disintegration of the Ottoman Empire due to the efforts of the criminal regeme, which was in power at the time, approximately two million Armenians were exterminated.
