Results of uranium deposits exploration in Armenia to be ready by end of 2011

Armenian Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Armen Movsisyan said that various people voice different statements, however, there are not officially confirmed uranium reserves in Armenia.

Currently exploration works are carried out to define whether there are similar reserves in the republic, as well as their quantity, Movsisyan told a press conference on December 21.

The Minister added that following the exploration works, it will be necessary to define whether these deposits exploitation will be economically feasible.

Besides, according to Movsisyan, it will be necessary to define the technology, which will allow reducing environmental impacts of the deposits development.

“If there are similar technologies for this kind of uranium, naturally, the state will undertake deposits development. Otherwise, exploitation is out of question,” said Movsisyan.

He reported that currently all works are aimed at obtainment of these assessments, the results of which will be available by the end of 2011.
