Armenian ecologists concerned over deposit exploration in Kapan

Ecologists are deeply concerned over the possibility of open exploration of the polymetallic deposit in Kapan, Syunik province of Armenia.

“Open exploration would have grave ecological consequences, including health problems,” Ecolur NGO chairperson Inga Zarafyan said.

“Two years ago a research showed that the concentration of heavy metals in the water, soil and foodstuffs is extremely high,” she said. “Now, the situation tends to worsen.”

She also emphasized that Ministries of Nature Protection and Healthcare, which are responsible for the issue, take no action to resolve the problem.
