The statement of NATO secretary general George Robertson on the leading role of Russia in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement results from his negotiations in Moscow. This opinion, as reported by “Arminfo” agency, Azeri political scientist Rasim Musabekov told “Turan” agency when summing up G. Robertson’s visit to Baku. In his opinion, the NATO wishes to give to understand that it is not going to assume the responsibility for conflicts in the region, which Russia still considers to be within the sphere of its influence and responsibility. At the same time the political scientist pointed out the continual growth of the interest of the NATO and its structures towards the South Caucasian region. In spite of that Robertson refrained from harsh statements in Azerbaijan. The main reason for that, in R. Musabekov’s opinion, is the outcome of the Moscow talks, as well as the crisis in the NATO resulting from the US and British military operations in Iraq.
