05.02.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Turkish NTV TV company quotes Turkish officials as saying that Armenia’s claims of Turkey closing its airspace are “ridiculous”.
Officials said that there were no decisions taken by Ankara regarding closing its airspace, and that all procedures and regulations governing flight over a third countries’ airspace are still adhered. In accordance with international aviation rules, an airline company must apply to pertaining authorities of countries to receive permission, three days before the day of the flight, for rights to cross the airspace of third party countries on international flights. Officials said that the Armenian Airlines company was not granted permission for the flight in question on the grounds that it had not applied to Turkey.
Armenian Airways Director Stanislav Mkrtumyan claimed on Saturday that Turkey barred an Armenian plane, on flight from Yerevan to Athens, from its airspace on Friday. Mkrtumyan added that the Turkish side did not offer any reasons for their so-called action. –0–
