30.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The Prime Minister of Turkey Bulent Ecevit declared today that Jacques Chirac’s signing of the Armenian genocide resolution makes Turkey to “reassess” its relations with France.
As the Turkish NTV TV-company reports, Ecevit stated: “We were not expecting a different stance from President Chirac, but hoping that he would be more open minded and unbiased of the situation”. Answering the question on Turkey’s further moves, Ecevit said that economic and political relations with France will now come under closer scrutiny.
Defense Minister of Turkey Sabahattin Cakmakoglu declared that “France will regret this decision which deeply injured Turkey”.
French President Jacques Chirac signed today the bill recognizing the Genocide of Armenians of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. The bill was unanimously adopted by the National Assembly of France on January 18, 2001. On November 8, 2000 the Armenian resolution was approved by the Upper House of the French Parliament – the Senate. -0-
