TURKEY WARNS FRANCE NOT TO BACK ARMENIAN BILL

10.01.2001, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. A delegation of Turkish parliamentarians has traveled to Paris to lobby against the bill recognizing claims of a genocide against Armenians 85 years ago.
“The draft law is based on exploitation of history and prejudice”, the Turkish parliament said in a cross-party decision approved on Tuesday.
The Upper House of the French parliament – the Senate passed the bill last November, and the Lower House is supposed to consider the Armenian Resolution January 18.
Turkey sees bills as ploys to appeal to voters of Armenian origin. “The French parliament refused to evaluate the painful events that took place in Algeria and resolved to leave the study of the events to historians. The Turkish people now expect the same behavior”, it said. -0-
