BarCamp Yerevan 2011 brings together around 1,000 people

On June 5, organizers of BarCamp Yerevan 2011 summarized the results of the IT informal conference held in Yerevan for the third time.

Samvel Martirosyan, an organizer of the event, told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter that the two-day event brought together around 1,000 participants – IT specialists, students, journalists, etc.

Another organizer of the event Yervand Aghababyan said for his part that it will be necessary to organize the next event in another place, since there are space problems in the current venue due to a great number of participants.

As part of BarCamp Yerevan 2011, discussion of presented reports and presentations was held. Participants of the event exchanged ideas, discussed newest trends and achievements in the IT field, telecommunications and media in an informal atmosphere. Besides, geo-location social networks, e-books and libraries, mobile journalism and other topics were in the focus of the informal conference.

Representatives of Opera Software company, the special guests of the informal conference, referred to modern web-standards, statistics of Opera mini usage for mobile internet, etc.

Journalist and presenter on BBC World News Pooneh Ghoddoosi briefed on how BBC social media covers some events with the assistance of amateur videos recorded by witnesses with their cell phones, short videos, etc.

BarCamp is an international network of user-generated conferences. They are open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and were related to open source technologies, social protocols and open data formats. The first BarCamp was held in Palo Alto, California, in 2005. Since then, BarCamps have been held in over 350 cities around the world.

ArmenTel company, Internews NGO through the financial support of USAID, Deem Communications and Opera Software companies, as well as PanARMENIAN Media assisted organization of BarCamp Yerevan 2011. The event has been organized in Armenia since 2009.
