15.11.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The joint declaration, signed on November 10 by the Pope John Paul II and the Catholicos of the Armenian Apostolic Church Garegin II, created tension in the relations between Ankara and Vatican and, thus, Ankara protested Vatican harshly.
The Turkish “Sabah” daily informs that the Charge d’Affaires of the Ankara Embassy was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where the envoy was received by the General Director of the European Department and was reminded of the fact that many Turkish people lost their lives during the Armenian relocation. During the meeting, it was said, “The Pope is carrying out religious discrimination. Regretfully, we consider his words subjective.” –0–
